Charlie Hebdo, a satirical French weekly (the name roughly translates to Charlie Weekly) is non-conformist and left wing in nature. Since its inception in 1970, Charlie Hebdo has published jokes, cartoons and reports on Catholicism, Islam, Judaism, politics, culture, etc. The name Charlie Hebdo was derived partially as an inside joke on Charles De Gaulle, the French ruler who still influences French politics. The name is also based on Charlie Brown, the lead character of the famous comic strip, Peanuts.

Charlie Hebdo was not new to threats and protests as their writings 'threatened' fanatical groups and religious organisations. However, in one of the most brutal attacks in France, 12 of Charlie Hebdo members were gunned down during a weekly editorial meeting by an Islamic terrorist group. The threats on the weekly had increased in frequency since they openly declared Prophet Muhammed as their editor-in-chief. Charb (Stéphane Charbonnier), the editor of the magazine till he was gunned down in the attacks, was already on the most wanted list of Al-Qaeda organisations for his anti-Islamic writings.

Two of the most devastating outbreaks of plague in history, each of which killed more than half the population of Europe, were caused by different strains of the same infectious agent, a study has revealed. 

The Justinian Plague of the 6th Century AD, which is credited with leading to the final demise of the Roman Empire, and the Black Death of the 14th Century, were both caused by the independent emergence of the plague bacterium from its natural host species, the black rat, scientists said. 

An analysis of bacterial DNA extracted from the teeth of two plague victims who died in the early 6th Century in present-day Bavaria, Germany, has shown that they were infected with the bacterium Yersinia pestis, the same plague agent known to have caused the Black Death 800 years later. 

However, a detailed comparison of the bacteria's DNA sequences has revealed that the two outbreaks were quite independent of one another. Each pandemic was the result of different Yersinia strains, indicating the independent emergence from the black rat on two separate occasions, the researchers said.

Throughout our history, most civilizations have either met a slow demise or were wiped out by natural disasters or invasion. But there are a few societies whose disappearance has scholars truly stumped:

One of the first Mesoamerican societies, the Olmec inhabited the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico. The first signs of the Olmec are around 1400 BC in the city of San Lorenzo, the main Olmec settlement which was supported by two other centers, Tenochtitlan and Potrero Nuevo. The Olmec were master builders with each of the major sites containing ceremonial courts, house mounds, large conical pyramids and stone monuments including the colossal head that they are most known for. The Olmec civilization relied heavily on trade, both between different Olmec regions and with other Mesoamerican societies. Because they were one of the earliest and most advanced Mesoamerican cultures at the time, they are often considered the mother culture of many other Mesoamerican cultures.

Where did they go?

Around 400 BC the eastern half of the Olmec’s lands was depopulated- possibly due to environmental changes. They may have also relocated after volcanic activity in the area. Another popular theory is that they were invaded, but no one knows whom the invaders might be.

The Nabateans were a Semitic culture that inhabited parts of Jordan, Canaan and Arabia from around the sixth century BC. They are most widely known as the builders of the city of Petra, which served as their capital. Petra is an impressive city carved out of the cliff side with the crown jewel being the Khazneh, or Treasury, a giant Greek inspired building. The Nabateans’ wealth was gained by being a major stop on a complex trading network, through which they traded ivory, silk, spices, precious metals, gems, incense, sugar perfume and medicine. Because of the extent of the trade route, the Nabatean culture was highly influenced by Hellenistic Greece, Rome, Arabia and Assyria. Unlike other societies of their time, there was no slavery and every member of society contributed in the work duties.

The Black Plague, the Great Mortality, and the Pestilence

The British children’s rhyme ‘Ring a Ring a Roses’ is all about the plague - either the Great Plague of 1665-6, or the Black Death centuries earlier - and dates from those eras.

The earliest known use of the rhyme is the Victorian era, and it almost certainly doesn’t date back to the plague (any of them). While the lyrics can be interpreted as being loosely connected to death and plague prevention, this is believed to be just that, an interpretation, and not a direct result of plague experience.

London's leafy Kensington Palace Gardens - home to Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal has been found to be the world's second-most-expensive street.

Mittal owns house number 9a and 18-19 on this tree-lined street. He has however put his neo-Georgian mansion on sale.

The selling price for the 14,736 square feet property (9a) has been earmarked at just £110 million- seven million pounds below what Mittal had bought it in 2008.

The 12-bedroom palatial home was the most expensive in Britain when he had bought it for £117 million.

It was bought for Mittal's son Aditya from Israeli-American financier Noam Gottesman. Realtors say properties here change hands for as much as £122 million on an average.

An annual survey of the English-speaking world's "top words" has seen "404" ("the near-universal numeric code for failure on the global Internet") take the top spot in 2013.

The survey, carried out by Global Language Monitor, doubles down on this somewhat pessimistic take on the year's events by ranking "fail" as the second most popular word.
