The popular mobile messaging application WhatsApp, acquired by Facebook last year for nearly $22 billion, has unveiled a new service for sending messages from a web browser.
WhatsApp, which claims some 500 million users, said its web service will be a "mirror" and would require an internet-connected phone to work.
"Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: The web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device — this means all of your messages still live on your phone," WhatsApp said in a blog post.

Her mother Mamta was one among her six

Jan Koum and Brian Acton have become overnight billionaires, courtesy Facebook buying their startup WhatsApp. However, things were not so great for the two till a few years ago. While Acton, who was looking for a job, faced rejection at Facebook and Twitter; Koum used to queue up for free food stamps.
Brian Acton will now finally join Facebook, which rejected him a job four and a half years ago. In a tweet on August 4, 2009, he wrote, "Facebook turned me down. It was a great opportunity to connect with some fantastic people. Looking forward to life's next adventure."
This rejection came just a few months after he was turned down by the other rising social networking star, Twitter. In a tweet on May 24, 2009, Acton writes: "Got denied by Twitter HQ. That's ok. Would have been a long commute."

The acquisition of the hot messaging service with more than 450 million users around the world stunned many Silicon Valley observers with its lofty price tag.

Facebook is in early stage discussions to acquire Bangalore-based app monitoring solutions startup Little Eye Labs. If it happens, it could be the social networking giant's first ever acquisition in India.
"We are in preliminary discussions. I cannot share anything beyond this," said Kumar Rangarajan, one of the co-founders of Little Eye Labs. Kumar, who calls himself the chief ion (founders call themselves ions, short for eye-ons), founded the company along with four friends in 2012. Facebook could not be contacted for the story.
Little Eye is a tool that helps Android app developers to measure, analyze and optimize their apps. It helps visualize the app's behaviour and estimates the app's power, memory and network data consumption trends.

Intelligence Bureau chief Syed Asif Ibrahim on Saturday conceded that Indian security agencies were handicapped by technical and procedural constraints in regulating malicious content on the internet, and favoured foreign content providers to be brought within the ambit of Indian laws.
Speaking about the deliberations during the three-day DGP conference here, which comprised a dedicated session on social media and law enforcement, Ibrahim said: "It was noticed that while security agencies in India are handicapped with technical and procedural constraints (in filtering malicious posts on social media), foreign law enforcement agencies have unfettered access to social media, considerably enhancing their law enfocement capabilities".
Acknowledging that the legal framework in this regard was still evolving in India, the IB chief said the DGP conference had recommended governing of foreign content by Indian laws, "supplemented with creation of our own cyber sub-space".

The banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan have created a Facebook page to recruit persons to write for a planned quarterly magazine and to work on tasks like video editing and translation.
The Umar Media TTP page, which has nearly 290 likes, has a message posted on November 22 seeking writers for "Ahyah-e-Khilafat", which is described as the "official quarterly magazine" of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.
"Dear brothers and sisters, 'Pen is mightier than the sword (sic)'. Now you have a chance to use this mighty weapon," the message says.
Prospective contributors can write on "on topic of your choice, or on jihadi current affairs, history, Islamic movements, plight of ummah, etc etc", the message adds.
An earlier message posted in October states that "Umar Media is proud to announce online jobs opportunities (sic)".
The job "description (sic) is video editing, translations, sharing, uploading, downloading and collection of required data".

Social networking giant Facebook Inc is all set to replace Indian software major Infosys Ltd to become a part of the Nasdaq 100 index from December 12.
According to Nasdaq: "Facebook Inc will become a component of the Nasdaq-100 Index, the Nasdaq-100 Equal Weighted Index, and the Nasdaq-100 Technology Sector Index prior to market open on Wednesday, December 12, 2012".
Facebook will replace Infosys Ltd on the index. The Facebook stock has lost a significant value since its much hyped public listing on May this year.
Facebook, Inc headquartered in Menlo Park, California currently has a market capitalisation of around USD 29.7 billion (Rs 1,62,000 crore). However, when the company went public, its market value was about USD 104 billion.
Meanwhile, Bangalore headquartered Infosys Ltd has a market capitalisation of Rs 1,37,327 crore.

Are you on Facebook? If yes, then stop posting the message that cites Berner Convention to safeguard your content on the social networking website. It's a hoax!
Facebook users are circulating and posting the lengthy message, believing that it is somehow going to provide copyright and privacy protection to whatever they post on their timelines.
The message reads, "In response to the new Facebook guidelines I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, paintings, professional photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times! (Anyone reading this can copy this text and paste it on their Facebook Wall.)"
The message also declares that a user, and not Facebook, is owner of the content. "By the present communique, I notify Facebook that it is strictly forbidden to disclose, copy, distribute, disseminate, or take any other action against me on the basis of this profile and/or its contents," it says.
While thousands of users who have posted the message on their timeline believe otherwise, the reality is that the message has no binding on Facebook or for that matter any other entity that can access the Facebook content and use it.

MUMBAI: Police on Sunday arrested a 21-year-old girl for questioning the total shutdown in the city for Bal Thackeray's funeral on her Facebook account.
Another girl who 'liked' the comment was also arrested.
The duo were booked under Section 295 (a) of the IPC (for hurting religious sentiments ) and Section 64 (a) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Though the girl withdrew her comment and apologized, a mob of some 2,000 Shiv Sena workers attacked and ransacked her uncle's orthopaedic clinic at Palghar, north of Mumbai.
Both the girls have been released on bail within hours, according to media reports.
The 21-year-old arrested for her Facebook post was among many who aired opinions on social networking sites.
"Her comment said people like Thackeray are born and die daily and one should not observe a 'bandh' (city shutdown) for that," Police Inspector Uttam Sonawane told the Mumbai Mirror.
Despite widespread concerns, there were no reports of unrest in Mumbai itself on the day of Bal Thackeray's crematon.
In recent months, the country has shown sensitivity to criticism of its politicians, sparking criticism in turn from freedom of speech campaigners.
In September, campaigners were outraged by the arrest in Mumbai on charges of sedition of a cartoonist for his anti-corruption drawings. The charges were later dropped.

Facebook and email trump sex in terms of sheer irresistibility, researchers say.
The German study used smartphone-based surveys to probe the daily desires of 205 men and women, most of whom were college age.
For one week the phones, provided by the researchers, buzzed seven times daily, alerting study subjects to take a quick survey on the type, strength and timing of their desires, as well as their ability to resist them.
The study found that while the desire for sex was stronger, the study subjects were more likely to cave into the desire to use media, including email and social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
"Media desires, such as social networking, checking emails, surfing the Web or watching television might be hard to resist in light of the constant availability, huge appeal, and apparent low costs of these activities," ABC News quoted study author Wilhelm Hofmann from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business as saying.

In 70% of all homicides taken place, the victim already knows the murderer. 30% of the time they are friends on Facebook.
There is almost always a known animosity between the killer and in his victim in homicide cases. There is almost always some form of metaphorical stabbing in the back that amounts to insane amounts of bitterness and a need for vengeance that ultimately results in the stabbing turning rather literal. In 70% of homicides therefore, the victim knows the murderer. But it doesn’t stop there. In 30% of cases, they’re friends on Facebook.
Although this might come as an initial shock to some, in reality, most killers have quite dormant and regular personalities on paper, or at least on their Facebook profiles. In Israel for example, last year, two Arab teenagers from the village of Awarta broke into a family’s home in a nearby village called Itamar. Upon examination of their Facebook profiles one would have expected to come across remarks or statuses reeking with anti-Semitism. Instead, the posts on their walls and their daily status updates did not depict homicidal tendencies in the least.

London (ANI): Facebook, which is supposed to be one of the most dynamic companies in the world, was deeply sexist and stuck in a 1950s mentality that was a cross between a frat house and 'Mad Men' until recently, a new book by a former senior staff member has claimed.
Katherine Losse, who worked for Facebook between 2005 and 2010, claims that female workers at the social network were propositioned for threesomes or given crude insults like 'I want to put my teeth in your ass' in 'The Boy Kings: A Journey into the Heart of the Social Network'.
Lower ranking employees, who were invariably female, were treated like "second class help" and banned from a conference unless they worked as coat checkers whilst there.
Meanwhile in between toga parties and late night 'hackathons', male engineers raced skateboards around desks as if they were in the X Games.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckberg has been compared to Napoleon and branded a 'little emperor' who created a company where his staff could 'idol worship' him.
On his 22nd birthday female workers were even asked to wear a T-shirt with his face on it in his honour.
Losse was employee number 51 and worked her way up from customer relations to a senior marketing role before becoming the speechwriter for Zuckerberg.

Apple’s announced its new operating system the iOS6 for iPhones, iPad, plus the newer iPod Touch devices. The one feature of the iOS6 that has sparked off a bunch of posts online is the OS’s integration with Facebook. Yes, Facebook will be now be ever more deeply ingrained in your iPhones, iPads and those using the new Mac OS, which is Mountain Lion.
According to this feature, Facebook will now appear by default in iPhone apps such as calendar, contacts and the App Store itself. Users will be able to post locations to Facebook directly from the maps app and post photos to Facebook directly from the photos app.
