‘Nude’ protest in Assam to get jawan punished

JORHAT: Over a thousand male activists from 22 organizations on Wednesday took-off their shirts and staged a protest in Sivasagar town against the state government's failure to punish an army jawan involved in the molestation of an Assamese girl at Dolpa area in the district.
The protestors walked bare-chested from Tai Kolakristi Kendra to Dolmukh Chariali in the heart of the town and organized a protest meeting in front of the DC's office. In the meeting, the speakers condemned the Dolpa incident and vehemently criticized the army and the government for failing to punish the guilty.
On July 13, a Mishing girl was molested by Anil Kumar Upadhaya, an army jawan, at the Dolpa area under Nitaipukhuri police station in Sivasagar district when the Naujan-based 287 army field regiment was patrolling the flood-affected area. The jawan was later arrested by the police and produced before the chief judicial magistrate's court in Sivasagar. The court handed the accused jawan to army officers for his trial by an army court. "We demanded Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the victim or a government job for her, besides the dismissal of the officer in-charge of Nitaipukhuri police station in three days. " an activist said.
