Snow, rain lash Kashmir Valley

Share The Knowledge

Upper reaches of Kashmir experienced first major snowfall of the season while the plains received overnight rainfall, resulting in steep drop in the day temperature.
The 434-km Srinagar-Leh highway was closed for traffic following heavy snowfall. The famous tourist resort of Gulmarg recorded 1.5 feet of snow and was the coldest place in the valley with a minimum of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius.
According to Metrological Department, weather is likely to improve on Friday.
Officials said Pahalgam hill resort received two inches of snow. They said Gurez and adjoining areas including Kazalwan and Tulail in Bandipora district recorded nearly one feet of snow, while Machil, Karnah, Keran and Tangdhar near the LoC in Kupwara district experienced seven to nine inches of snow till last reports were received.
Upper reaches of Kashmir experienced first major snowfall of the season while the plains received overnight rainfall, resulting in steep drop in the day temperature.
Snowfall prompted authorities to suspend traffic on the roads connecting the border towns of Gurez, Machil, Karnah, Tangdhar and Keran. However, the Srinagar-Jammu highway remained open for traffic.
Srinagar received 2.8 mm of rainfall till late afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Met department has predicted improvement in weather. “We are expecting a change in weather by tomorrow. There will be clouds on Friday but we expect no rain or snow,” said an official of Met department.
People expressed relief from the dry spell, which has even affected the power supply of the valley.
Dry spell was going on in Kashmir since October, which was worrying the farming community, which has been at the receiving end of the nature for most of the last decade as the climatic conditions changed, making Kashmir winters more dry and resulting in depletion in the water reservoirs of the valley.
“There was no moisture in the soil and November rains always help in productivity of crops,” said Shafiq Wani, research expert at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology.
“This rain helps in germination of seeds and is a welcome one for all those related with agriculture.”
He said as the climate change is becoming more obvious in Kashmir, the winters are becoming less severe, but get prolonged.
“We don’t have data to say how much of it is a consequence of climate change, but the changing weather patterns are visible in our winters for sure.”
Meanwhile, Mughal Road remained closed for second consecutive day.
Sources said snowfall was reported from hilly areas of Ramban and Banihal while over one feet snowfall has been recorded at the tourist destination of Patintop.
Sources said that the helicopter service to the shrine cave in Katra has also been suspended for time being due to inclement weather.
Poonch district received nearly 16 mm rainfall, Katra 2.8 mm and Jammu district 5.4 mm. The weather condition is likely to improve on Friday, according to meteorology department.
