Losing Friends for Love

A study by the oxford university suggests, when you fall in love you lose two close friends.
A recent study by Professor Robin Dunbar of the Oxford University reveals that on average, every individual has a circle of close friends. By close friends, the study means people that you would approach in case of a problem, be it financial or emotional. The researcher believes that the circle of friends consists of five people on average. One has to divide their time equally for all friends in order to maintain the friendship. However, when a romantic relationship enters the equation, people tend to have lesser free time. Since the romantic partner takes up more of our time, we end up becoming distant from two friends.
This result was found for both males and females. An online survey was conducted from more than 420 people. The research was done to show how romantic relationships affect a person’s other relationships with friends and family. Professor Dunbar admitted that the findings were a surprise. The explanation he gave was that people lose their closeness to other people rather quickly in case enough time is not spent between them. Since the romantic relationship takes up a lot of time, little is left to develop and maintain other relationships.
Professor Dunbar is also famous for his studies on social networking websites and their impact on people. A previous study looked at the difference between men and women’s friends lists on Facebook.
