Mother’s corner: Motherhood and its many twists and turns

Share The Knowledge

To celebrate mother’s day this year, we bring you real stories from real mothers. Today, the spotlight is on Dr Nisreen Nakhoda, who feels extremely fortunate to have been blessed with a six-year-old and a three-year-old.

A mother’s viewpoint
After tying the knot, I had a child after four years by choice as motherhood didn’t seem all that appealing. I thought I would be a really cool mom but when my son was born and was sickly as an infant, I became quite paranoid about what he should eat, what he should and should not do. I also didn’t have enough confidence whether I was doing things right.
The journey of motherhood
Motherhood has been a journey with many twists and turns and I found it interesting and challenging but also very demanding physically and time-wise. When your sleep pattern goes haywire for months together and you have to be on alert looking out for the baby, life becomes stressful. But with the second one, there was no second-guessing as I had figured out the important stuff. The general view is that the second time around it’s easier. My view is –the second one is easier but taking care of two sets of needs and demands is super-stressful. My paediatrician is my right hand and my husband was an emotional anchor through the early years.
Growing up!
What I realise is that each kid has his own identity, body clock and habits so it’s important to give them their space. My elder son is quite independent and the gang leader and my daughter is happy to follow him around and take instructions. Also, I feel blessed because my son always looks out for my daughter at home and outside. I find that my son is very sensitive while my daughter is more loving and always ready for a cuddle. They are similar in certain ways like both are opinionated and know what they want but what I love is that they are both happy by nature and not cranky or moody.

What I love most about being a mom is seeing my children flower and bloom into beautiful people. I feel quietly proud and happy that we are a loving family and are there for each other. My child’s every achievement is a special gift and I want to push them in a positive way.

One piece of advice for moms to be is to be calm and practical and enlist help of family or nannies so that you can get a break from time to time to unwind and come back to your kids feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and full of beans.
